The BTR-60 became the first in a series of Soviet four-wheeled armored personnel carriers, the development and production of which continues to this day. The BTR-60 was produced in series, undergoing numerous upgrades, from 1960 to 1976 at the Gorky Automobile Plant, and then at the Kurgan Wheel Tractor Plant (KWTP) until 1987. According to various sources, between 10,000 and 25,000 vehicles were produced. It was also produced under license in Romania under the designation TAB-71.

It was the main armored personnel carrier of Soviet motorized rifle units in the 1960s, and in the 1970s and 1980s, it was largely replaced by the BTR-70 and BTR-80. It was used by Soviet forces in a number of armed conflicts, including the Soviet-Afghan War. It was supplied to dozens of other countries by both the USSR and Romania, and was used in countless regional conflicts. Despite gradually being replaced by more modern equipment, as of 2007, it is still in service with approximately 47 countries.

All vehicles in the BTR-60 family are fully amphibious, moving on water with the help of water jets located in the rear of the hull at a speed of 10 km/h, and have the same layout: the commander and driver are at the front, the troop compartment is in the center, and two gasoline engines are in the stern.

The BTR-60MK is a modernized version produced by LLC “KORT.”

The Khurunzhii is a deeply modernized version developed by NVO “Praktika.” It has a more spacious troop compartment, increased ballistic protection, mine protection (provided by a multilayer floor and special anti-shock seats), air conditioning, a modern diesel engine (replacing the original BTR-60’s two gasoline engines), modern observation devices, and the ability to install a remote-controlled weapon station (RCWS).
