10.10.2023

The National Defence University of Ukraine has recently organized a three-day introductory English-language course on the experience of the current russian-Ukrainian war for representatives of the Kyiv Association of Military Attachés (KAVA).

During the closing ceremony, KAVA President Colonel Alexandrs Holmanovs, Military Attaché of the Republic of Latvia to Ukraine, expressed his gratitude to the leadership of the National Defence University of Ukraine for the productive and effective work of the course organizers and instructors:

– As members of the Kyiv Association of Military Attachés, we highly appreciate the efforts that the National Defence University of Ukraine has made to implement the project of conducting a course on sharing the experience of the russian-Ukrainian war. We believe that this course is extremely important for diplomats and military attachés working here in Kyiv to understand the overall situation and learn the lessons learned by Ukraine.

Colonel Alexandrs Holmanovs, on behalf of the course participants, also assured that all civilized European countries will continue to support actively the Ukrainian people in order to achieve a speedy victory over the Kremlin's invaders. After all, the peaceful future of the entire region will depend on the security situation in Ukraine.

– You took responsibility in the fight against such a powerful aggressor. The ongoing war is not only a confrontation between Ukraine and russia, the military attaché added. – The experience accumulated and summarized by the Ukrainian side is strategically important for other countries to implement in their education and training programs.

Colonel General Mykhailo Koval, Commandant of the Defence University of Ukraine, emphasized the importance of continuing to share the Ukrainian experience in order to form a common understanding of the nature of the russian-Ukrainian war and the challenges of russia’s aggressive policy to democracy. In addition, the commandant conveyed to the representatives of the diplomatic corps words of gratitude to the governments they represent for helping Ukraine in the fight against the russian occupier. According to him, the courage of the Ukrainian soldier, reinforced by the weapons and military equipment provided by our country’s allies, guarantees the victory of the Armed Forces of Ukraine over the aggressor, because the enemy's capabilities are much lower than the potential we have thanks to our partners.

For reference

“The Russian-Ukrainian War: Origins, Course, Forecast” course was initiated by commandant Colonel General Mykhailo Koval during his visit to NATO Headquarters last fall. It is currently being conducted by experienced English-speaking researchers and faculty of the university. Recently, a group of university specialists joined the newly created Professional Military Education Institute “Leadership School”. The course director is Colonel Yuriy Punda, Head of the Professional Military Education Institute “Leadership School”.

Its representatives regularly conduct week-long introductory courses for representatives of foreign military universities and academies, senior military personnel and representatives of the Defence ministries of NATO nations and partners. During lectures, panel and group discussions, the experience gained by the Ukrainian Defence Forces in repelling Russian aggression is shared with our NATO partners to help them understand current and future conflicts. Currently, the main list includes 20 topics that analyse and summarize the course of the russian-Ukrainian war from general features to individual episodes. Among them are the operation of UAVs, aviation, artillery and missile weapons, enemy operations in the information environment, and cybersecurity.

The purpose of “russian-Ukrainian War: Origins, Course, Forecast” course is to provide lecturers, students and students of military educational institutions of Ukraine’s partner countries with an opportunity to better develop a strategy for responding to the challenges of Russia’s aggressive policy. The course is aimed at developing a common vision of the modern security environment and creating a forum for generating and exchanging new ideas.

To date, the English-language course program has already been presented in the Republic of Lithuania, the Republic of Latvia, the Kingdom of Sweden, the Kingdom of Denmark, the Republic of Poland, as well as in an online format for colleagues from the French Republic. In addition, negotiations with four other NATO countries are underway to conduct the course. In the future, the program will be presented in the United States, where it will include work at the Pentagon and West Point Academy.

It is worth noting that with the support and expert assessment of the NATO DEEP (Defence Education Enhancement Program) leadership, the course materials will be included in a joint publication “Basic Program for Studying the Experience of the russian-Ukrainian War”, which will be used and distributed in military educational institutions of all NATO nations and partners.
