English for Scientists: moving from B1 towards B2 in 5 months

15.01.2024

Learning English is essential for scientists, not only for fostering global communication and collaboration in research, but also for the effective dissemination of knowledge. Mastery of English provides access to a broad spectrum of scientific literature and resources, which are predominantly available in English, thus enabling scientists to contribute to and benefit from the global scientific community.

'Science at Risk' and the Regional English Language Office/U.S. Embassy, Ukraine, launched an intensive course for Ukrainian scientists to improve their English language proficiency. Our focus is to improve your speaking level so you can present confidently at conferences and engage effectively with your international colleagues. Our goal is to elevate your speaking skills from a B1 to a B2 level.

It is FREE to participate!

We will select two groups of 20 scientists each (total 40 scientists). Every
group will have 2 classes per week with a Virtual English language educator. Each class lasts 1 hour and 30 minutes. The educator will also give you homework.

Timeframe:

January 29  – May 31, 2024

17 weeks of classes (off weeks – April 29 and May 6)

Days:

Group 1: Monday and Wednesday 6:00-7:30pm Kyiv time

Group 2: Tuesday and Thursday 6:00-7:30pm Kyiv time

Who is eligible to apply? Ukrainian scientists who meet the following criteria: 1) Are currently residing either in Ukraine or abroad. 2) Have a B1 level in English.

The application is open until 23:59 (Kyiv time) on January 19th.

We will send out the results by 22d of January.

We select participants on a first come, first served basis. All scientists who are part of the 'Science at Risk' expert platform have priority in the selection process. Selected participants will undergo a preliminary assessment before the first class to confirm a uniform B1 level within the group, ensuring effective progress. If you are uncertain about your current level of speaking skills, please choose the closest estimation in the form.
