The work of the International Conference "Considering gender issues in the curricula of higher education institutions in the Security and Defense sector of Ukraine", organized by the UN Women

Deputy Commandant of NDU for academic affairs major-general Serhii Salkutsan and representatives of the University during March 19-20, had taken an active part in the work of the International Conference "Considering gender issues in the curricula of higher education institutions in the Security and Defense sector of Ukraine", organized by the UN Women's Representative Office in Ukraine.

The conference was attended by Vice Prime Minister for European and Euro-Atlantic Integration of Ukraine, rectors and vice-rectors of higher educational institutions for the Security and Defense Sector, gender advisers at military higher education institutions, officers responsible for gender issues in departments of the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine, General Staff and professors of universities.

The purpose of the conference is to create a platform for exchanging experiences, challenges and approaches to gender mainstreaming and the agenda Women, Peace and Security in educational programs between representatives of various education institutions in the Security and Defense sector, representatives of the ministries of the EU, NATO and neighboring countries.

During the conference, the participants exchanged best practices and methods for incorporating gender issues into the development of curricula, as well as institutionalizing gender issues into the curricula of the Security and Defense sector in Ukraine.

- In order to integrate the principle of gender equality into the educational process of the National Defense University of Ukraine named after Ivan Chernyakhovskyi, we intent to develop innovative approaches that will lead to a deeper understanding of gender issues and the formation of gender competences for officers of operational and strategic levels of training, - said in his speech Serhii Salkutsan.

As a result of the conference, a resolution and proposals for the formulation of the Government's Perspective Action Plan were elaborated. In pursuance of the undertaken commitments and in order to integrate gender issues into the educational process in 2019, the National Defense University of Ukraine plans to develop a course "Gender equality and the basis of gender policy in the Armed Forces of Ukraine" for the employees and students of the University, which will be Integrated into the e-learning system. The second issue is a representative of the University Liudmyla Krymets will be involved in the process of writing a textbook on the implementation of gender issues in the educational process and educational programs of Security and Defense sector in Ukraine at the request of the UN Women's Representative Office in Ukraine.
