The Centre for Military and Strategic Studies is a structural research unit of the National Defence University of Ukraine, whose main purpose is scientific and technical activities aimed at obtaining new scientific and applied results, which includes conducting scientific research, creating scientific products and scientific support for their implementation in the interests of the Ministry of Defence of Ukraine, the Armed Forces of Ukraine, as well as scientific support of the educational process at the University.
Historical reference
The Centre for Military and Strategic Studies was established as part of the National Defence Academy of Ukraine on April 30, 2008 in accordance with the Resolution of the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine No. 666 of 26.04.2007 "On measures to optimise the network of research institutions of the Armed Forces of Ukraine" and the Order of the Minister of Defence of Ukraine No. 615 of 23.10.2006 "On the establishment of the Centre for Military and Strategic Studies of the National Defence Academy of Ukraine".
The Centre was formed on the basis of the National Research Centre for Defence Technologies and Military Security of Ukraine, the Scientific and Methodological Centre for Military Education of the Ministry of Defence of Ukraine and the Scientific Centre of the National Defence Academy of Ukraine.
Main objectives:
- scientific research on the following issues: military policy and military strategy, development of information technologies and implementation of informatization projects, development of military education and science, economic and legal issues of resource provision in the military sphere, defence and military construction;
- development of scientific works (military theoretical works, monographs, manuals, scientific articles, reports, etc);
- development of proposals for draft legislative and other regulatory acts;
- preparation for the publication of the "Collection of scientific works of the Centre for Military and Strategic Studies" and the collection of scientific works “Military Education”;
- research staff preparation;
- scientific and practical conferences and seminars;
- scientific support for the implementation of the results obtained in the course of scientific research in the practical activities of the Ministry of Defence of Ukraine, the Armed Forces of Ukraine, as well as in the educational process and scientific activities of the National Defence University of Ukraine;
- scientific and technical support for the creation and operation of automated defence resource management systems.
The scientific potential
The key to the successful performance of the tasks assigned to the Centre is its strong scientific potential: 10 Doctors of Sciences, 7 Professors and 58 Candidates of Sciences (Philosophy Doctors). Eight employees of the Centre have the honorary titles of Honored Scientist and Technologist of Ukraine, Honored Education Worker of Ukraine, Honored Inventor of Ukraine, and Honored Lawyer of Ukraine.
Organizational structure
The Centre consists of:
- Command (Executive Management Board);
- Research and Development Department of Military Policy and Military Strategy;
- Research and Development Department of Information Technology Development and Implementation of Informatization Projects;
- Research and Development Department for the Development of Military Education and Science;
- Research and Development Department of Resource Provision in the Military, Defence and Military Construction sectors;
- Scientific and Organizational Department.
International cooperation
The National Defence University of Ukraine and the Norwegian Defence University College have signed a cooperation agreement within the framework of the research project “Total Defence”. The Centre for Military and Strategic Studies is responsible for the implementation of this project.
The aim of cooperation within the project is to deepen scientific cooperation in the field of defence, exchange research results and experience gained to develop ways to acquire (strengthen) the necessary defence capabilities, strengthen the defence and national stability of Ukraine and Norway.
Scientific cooperation within the framework of the research project is carried out in the following areas:
- joint research, exchange of results, lessons learned, and practical experience on topics agreed upon between the project leaders from the Norwegian and Ukrainian sides;
- training of researches (conducting research internships, educational and training courses, PhDs preparation, etc);
- publication of joint scientific works, as well as mutual review of scientific works: collections of scientific works, monographs, scientific articles, etc., in particular by including leading researchers on a bilateral basis in the editorial boards of scientific publications;
- jointly holding scientific, scientific and practical conferences, seminars, round tables, and other scientific events.
