The Foreign Languages Department is a structural unit of the Foreign Languages Educational and Research Center of the National Defence University of Ukraine. It offers language training at the tactical, operational, and strategic levels of military education for academic degrees such as "Bachelor," "Master," and "Doctor of Philosophy," as well as participants in advanced training and foreign language courses within Ukraine's Armed Forces.
The Department's main tasks are:
- to carry out educational activities that provide language training for officers pursuing higher education degrees at the levels of "Bachelor," "Master," and "Doctor of Philosophy";
- to conduct educational activities that provide advanced training and professional development in the field of language training for military personnel, employees of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, officials of other security and defence sector components of Ukraine, and civil servants;
- to conduct scientific, research, and innovative activities in the field of language training in the interests of the Ministry of Defence of Ukraine, the Armed Forces of Ukraine, and other components of the national security and defence sector;
- to provide scientific and methodological support for the educational process in the field of foreign language learning within higher military educational institutions;
- to ensure academic staff mobility in NATO member and partner countries' higher education institutions and training centres.
The key feature is a comprehensive language training and professional development cycle for foreign language teachers, ensuring the formation of highly professional personnel for the military education system.
Professional Development and Foreign Language Courses
The Department provides professional development for foreign language teachers of military educational institutions, military personnel, security and defence sector employees, and civil servants through specialized training courses such as:
- Professional Development Course on the Organization and Methodology of Foreign Language Teaching;
- Professional Development Course on the Fundamentals of Organization and Methodology of English language Teaching for Novice Teachers, titled 'Introduction to English Language Teaching Methodology';
- The Professional Development Course for Language Training Instructors on the Organization and Methodology of Foreign Language teaching.
Twice a year, the Foreign Languages Department conducts foreign language courses for the Armed Forces of Ukraine personnel, using authentic materials from the American Language Course developed by the Defense Language Institute, Texas, USA.
Scientific and Methodological Activities
The Department conducts scientific research and offers scientific and methodological support for language training. It contributes to research and innovation projects and ensures the integration of educational, scientific, and innovative activities.
International Cooperation
The Department develops international relations with foreign higher education institutions and international organizations, and participates in NATO programs, particularly the Defence Education Enhancement Programme (DEEP). It ensures academic mobility for the academic staff and students and represents the University in the international educational community on matters of language training.
