The Institute of Aviation and Air Defense was established on March 1, 2010. Its administrative divisions and academic departments were staffed, and educational activities commenced for aviation and air defense specialists of the Security and Defense Forces of Ukraine.

The Institute traces its origins to the Faculty for the Training of Operational and Tactical Level Specialists of the Air Force, founded in 2000. This faculty, in turn, was established on the basis of the Kyiv Institute of the Air Force.

The Institute of Aviation and Air Defense is a structural subdivision of the National Defense University of Ukraine. It offers training at the second (master's) and third (Doctor of Philosophy) levels of higher education for cadets, students, and adjuncts to fill officer positions at the tactical, operational, and strategic levels across designated specialties and specializations. The aim is to meet the needs of the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine, the Armed Forces of Ukraine, the National Guard of Ukraine, the State Border Guard Service of Ukraine, and other components of the Defense Forces.

In addition, the Institute provides advanced training for military specialists and conducts scientific, scientific-technical, and innovative activities commissioned by the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine, the Command of the Air Force of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, other defense structures, and the University itself.

The Institute of Aviation and Air Defense is both an educational-methodological and scientific unit, comprising the command section, academic department, research department, courses for students, and five specialized departments: Air Force, Aviation, Anti-Aircraft Missile Troops, Radio-Technical and Special Troops, Air Force Logistics.

This organizational structure enables the Institute to function as a leading center encompassing all areas of activity—educational, methodological, scientific, and technical—and to operate as a structural formation with a complete, integrated cycle of training for aviation and air defense professionals.

The main tasks of the Institute include:
  • training military specialists to obtain the second (master's) level of higher education with the degree of Master in specialty K3 “National Security (in specific areas of security and types of activity)”;
  • training military specialists to obtain the second (master's) level of higher education with the degree of Master in specialties K5 “Military Management (by branches of the Armed Forces)” and K6 “Troop (Force) Support”;
  • training highly qualified research and academic staff (Doctor of Sciences, Doctor of Philosophy) for the Armed Forces of Ukraine and other military formations;
  • participating in the training of specialists in advanced academic courses, professional development courses, and professional military education programs;

  • participating in the training of military specialists from foreign countries;
  • conducting scientific activities through research projects, scientific and practical conferences (seminars), development of scientific publications, implementation of other types of research work, and integrating the results into the educational process;

  • developing and improving the legal and regulatory framework, as well as the material and technical base to support the educational process;
  • fostering the cultural and spiritual development of individuals and cultivating personnel in the spirit of patriotism and respect for the Constitution of Ukraine.

The ultimate test of officer training at the Institute of Aviation and Air Defense has been the experience of war. From the very first hours of the large-scale aggression by the russian federation against Ukraine, the institute's faculty, students, and graduates stood to defend the skies of our country. They demonstrated exceptional combat readiness, as well as courage, bravery, and heroism, for which they were awarded state honors, including the title of Hero of Ukraine, orders and medals.
