Pavlo OPENKO
The Air Force Department was established in March 2004 as the legal successor to the former Department of the Air Force, following organizational restructuring at the National Defense Academy of Ukraine. Since its founding, the department has been led by officers and employees of the Armed Forces of Ukraine with extensive experience in academic and research work at institutions of higher education.
The Air Force Department is a core structural unit of the Institute of Aviation and Air Defense of the National Defense University of Ukraine. It carries out educational, methodological, scientific, and scientific-technical activities in designated specialties and specializations, and is subordinated to the Director of the Institute of Aviation and Air Defense.
The department consists of: the department’s leadership, academic and teaching staff and an educational laboratory. This structure allows the department to fully implement its teaching, methodological, scientific, and technical functions.
The main tasks of the department include the implementation of educational activities to ensure:
- the attainment of the second (master’s) level of higher education in specialty K3 “National Security (in specific areas of security and types of activity)” and the qualification of a strategic-level officer;
- participation in the training of military specialists obtaining the first (bachelor’s) level of higher education at the University in specified specialties and the qualification of a tactical-level officer;
- participation in the training of military specialists obtaining the second (master’s) level of higher education at the University in all specialties and the qualification of a strategic, operational, or tactical-level officer;
- participation in the training of scientific and academic personnel obtaining the third (educational and scientific) level of higher education (Doctor of Philosophy) for the Armed Forces of Ukraine and other military formations established under the laws of Ukraine in the field of knowledge K “Security and Defense,” as well as in the preparation of Doctors of Science;
- training students in retraining and advanced training courses on issues related to airspace protection planning and air defense of critical state and military facilities outside the scope of armed conflict, as well as planning, employment, and command of troops (forces) in air operations;
- participation in courses for professional development and skill enhancement;
- participation in the delivery of professional military education courses for officers at the operational (L-3) and strategic (L-4) levels;
- participation in the training of operational-level officers for Air Force command and control centers of the Armed Forces of Ukraine;
- implementation of methodological activities;
- implementation of scientific, scientific-technical, and innovative activities through research projects, scientific-practical conferences (seminars), development of scholarly works, execution of other types of research, and integration of results into the educational process;
- development and improvement of the legal-regulatory framework and the material and technical base to support educational, scientific, and technical activities;
- fostering the cultural and spiritual development of individuals and the patriotic upbringing of personnel with respect for the Constitution of Ukraine.
Representatives of the department regularly publish scientific works, including in journals indexed in international scientometric databases such as Scopus. They actively participate in academic conferences and seminars, including international ones, as well as in research projects, development of utility model patents, and innovation proposals.
The scientific potential of the department includes 10 Candidates of Sciences, one Doctor of Philosophy, and academic staff who hold academic titles such as Professor, Associate Professor, and Senior Research Fellow.
The department’s personnel possess combat and operational experience gained during the Anti-Terrorist Operation (Joint Forces Operation), the full-scale armed aggression of the russian federation, and international peacekeeping missions.
