Pavlo OPENKO
The Air Force Department is a structural unit of the Aviation and Air Defence Institute of the National Defence University of Ukraine, it operates under the authority of the Chief of the Institute and is responsible for training military and civilian specialists at the second (master’s) level of higher education of operational and strategic levels.
The department was established on March 7, 2004, and became the successor of the Air Force Department as a result of the National Defence Academy of Ukraine reorganization. In the future, the Chiefs of the department were officers, employees of the Armed Forces of Ukraine with extensive work experience in educational and scientific activities in higher educational institutions. By the order of the Minister of Defence of Ukraine from February 2024, colonel Pavlo Openko was appointed as the Chief of the Department and has held this position to the present day.
The Department consists of the department’s management, research and teaching staff, and a training laboratory. This structure enables the department to carry out educational, methodological, scientific, and technical activities.
The main tasks of the department include:
- participation in training of doctors of philosophy in specialties 253 “Military management (by types of armed forces)”, 255 “Armament and military equipment”;
- participation in the training of military and civilian specialists at the second (master’s) level of higher education in the field of knowledge 25 “Military sciences, national security, security of the state border” in the specialty 256 “National security by certain types and spheres of support” (specialization: “Strategic leadership in the security sector and defence”);
- participation in the training of military specialists at the second (master’s) level of higher education in the field of knowledge 25 “Military sciences, national security, state border security” according to university specialties;
- participation in the training of military specialists at the courses of professional military education “Senior management of Strategic Level Course” (L-4); courses of the operational level (L-3) “Joint Staff Officers’ Course Operational Level”;
- participation in the training of specialists at advanced training and professional development courses;
- implementation of scientific, scientific-technical and innovative activities;
- establishment and improvement of the regulatory, legal, material, and technical framework for educational activities;
- assurance of cultural and spiritual development of individuals, fostering a sense of patriotism, and promoting respect for the Constitution of Ukraine.
Representatives of the department regularly publish scientific publications, including in publications indexed in the international scientific and metric database SCOPUS, constantly participate in scientific conferences and seminars, including international ones, take an active part in scientific research, development of patents and rationalizing proposals.
The scientific potential of the Department consists of 10 PhD, doctor of philosophy. There are research and teaching staff with academic titles: professor, associate professor and senior researcher.
The staff of the Department has experience in performing combat (special) tasks during the anti-terrorist operation (operation of the joint forces), during the large-scale armed aggression of the russian federation and international peacekeeping operations.
