The Air and Missile Defence Department is a unit within the Aviation and Air Defence Institute of the National Defence University of Ukraine. It operates under the authority of the Chief of the Institute and is responsible for training military specialists at the second (master's) level of higher education, focusing on the operational level of military education.

The department was established on March 1, 2010, and became the successor of the Air Force Department as a result of the university's reorganization.

The department consists of the department's management, research and teaching staff, and a training laboratory. This structure enables the department to carry out educational, methodological, scientific, and technical activities.

The main tasks of the department include:

  • Participation in the training of military specialists for the second (master's) level of higher education in 253 and 254 specialties and relevant specializations (“Combat use and management of anti-aircraft missile troops military units actions”, “Organization of operation and repair of weapons and military equipment of anti-aircraft missile troops”) for the Ministry of Defence of Ukraine and the Armed Forces of Ukraine.;
  • Involvement in the training of specialists in higher academic courses, advanced training courses, and professional development courses;
  • Contribution to the training of military specialists from foreign countries;
  • Implementation of scientific and scientific and technical activities;
  • Establishment and improvement of the regulatory, legal, material, and technical framework for educational activities;
  • Assurance of cultural and spiritual development of individuals, fostering a sense of patriotism, and promoting respect for the Constitution of Ukraine.

Since its establishment, the department has trained more than 300 highly qualified operational management specialists, including those who received honors degrees upon graduation. Graduates of the department hold senior positions in anti-aircraft missile units, as well as in military command and control bodies of various levels. Among the department's graduates there are many who have received state and departmental awards for their courage and heroism during the russian-Ukrainian war and for their success in their official activities.

Under the guidance of the Department's academic staff, 7 Doctors of Philosophy have been trained. The academic staff of the Department has published 10 textbooks, 8 manuals, and 15 other information and analytical publications. Representatives of the department regularly publish scientific publications, including those indexed in the international scientific and metric database SCOPUS. They regularly participate in scientific conferences and seminars, including international ones, and take an active part in research work, development of utility model patents, and innovation proposals. During participation in competitions of scientific works, the students of the department won prizes and received diplomas of II and III degrees.

The department has 5 candidates of military sciences and 2 doctors of philosophy. There are 5 people with academic titles: 4 associate professors and 1 senior researcher. The officers of the department are actively involved in combat and special tasks during the russian-Ukrainian war.
