The research department in the framework of its activities:

• organizes and conducts scientific research on the current problems of the development of military theory and practice, the development and application of communication technologies and cyber defense, information and analytical technologies, electromagnetic warfare and the security of information resources, improving the system of military education;
• by order of the leadership of the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine and the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, organizes and implements operational tasks in the areas of activity of the institute;
• carries out scientific and technical support of the scientific periodical "Modern information technologies in the sphere of security and defense" in the areas of: computer science, system analysis, military management, weapons and military equipment;
• manages the training of scientific-pedagogical, scientific workers and adjuncts, organizes and monitors the work of scientific circles of the institute's departments;
• organizes and participates in research at the operational training of troops (forces), in international and all-Ukrainian events (conferences, seminars, consultations) in the areas of activity of the institute.

In 2023, SRD took part in 3 research works and 2 operational tasks, published 3 collections of the scientific periodical "Modern information technologies in the field of security and defense". Participated in 4 International and All-Ukrainian scientific and practical conferences and seminars.
