The history of the Department of Radio-Technical and Special Troops began in July 2000 with the first enrollment of specialists in communications, automated command systems, and radio-technical support for aviation, which took place within the Department of Communications, Automated Command Systems, and Radio-Technical Support for Aviation at the National Defense Academy of Ukraine.
The Department of Radio-Technical and Special Troops was established as a separate structural unit on March 1, 2010, within the Institute of Aviation and Air Defense, based on the former Department of the Air Force, as part of the organizational restructuring of the National Defense University of Ukraine.
It is a base structural subdivision of the Institute of Aviation and Air Defense at the National Defense University of Ukraine, responsible for educational, methodological, scientific, and scientific-technical activities in designated specialties and specializations. The department is subordinated to the Director of the Institute.
The department consists of: department leadership, academic and teaching staff, and an educational laboratory.
This structure enables the department to fully implement its educational, methodological, scientific, and technical functions.
The department provides officer training for the Master's degree in the field of knowledge K “Security and Defense” in the following specialties:
- K5 “Military Management (by branches of the Armed Forces)” – specialists in the combat employment and command of radio-technical troops;
- K6 “Troop (Force) Support)” – specialists in the organization of communications, command automation, and radio-technical support; organization of maintenance and repair of radio-technical troops' armaments and military equipment.
The department’s main tasks include the implementation of educational activities to ensure:
- participation in the training of military specialists obtaining the second (master’s) level of higher education in specialties K5 “Military Management (by branches of the Armed Forces)” and K6 “Troop (Force) Support” and qualification as operational-level officers;
- participation in the training of military specialists at the master’s level across all specialties, qualifying as officers at the strategic, operational, and tactical levels;
- participation in the training of academic and scientific personnel at the third (educational and scientific) level of higher education (Doctor of Philosophy) for the Armed Forces of Ukraine and other military formations established under Ukrainian law in the field of knowledge K “Security and Defense,” including specialties K5, K6, K7 “Armaments and Military Equipment,” and other relevant University programs, as well as participation in the training of Doctors of Sciences;
- participation in advanced training courses and professional military education;
- conducting methodological activities;
- conducting scientific, scientific-technical, and innovative activities through the implementation of research projects, scientific and practical conferences (seminars), development of scholarly works, and other forms of scientific work, with integration of research outcomes into the educational process;
- developing and improving the legal-regulatory framework and the material-technical base to support educational, scientific, and technical activities;
- promoting cultural and spiritual development and fostering patriotic education and respect for the Constitution of Ukraine among personnel.
Faculty members of the department regularly publish research papers, including in journals indexed in international scientometric databases such as Scopus. They actively participate in academic conferences and seminars, including international ones, and are engaged in research and development activities, utility model patenting, and innovation proposals.
The scientific potential of the department includes seven Candidates of Technical Sciences, two Doctors of Philosophy, and academic and teaching staff with academic titles of Professor and Associate Professor.
With many years of experience in training specialists for radio-technical troops, communications forces, cybersecurity, and radio-technical support, the Department of Radio-Technical and Special Troops is a unit that plays an active role in strengthening national defense capabilities by developing human capital. It prepares highly qualified professionals for the security and defense sector in accordance with the best educational standards and NATO practices, ensuring readiness for future challenges.
The department’s personnel have combat experience.
