The department´s history and development:

The intelligence department is the structural unit of the command and post institute for the use of troops (force) of National Defense University of Ukraine.

The history of the intelligence department begins in November, 1993, when the basic structural units of the Ukrainian Armed Forces Academy were being formed.

It takes its origins from the former Air Defense Military Academy named after Marshal of the Soviet Union O.M.Vasylevskiy.

According to the order of the Minister of Defense of November 08, 1993, colonel Chernyh Yuriy Mytrofanovych was assigned as the first head of the Ukrainian Armed Forces Academy´s intelligence department.

The intelligence department Day is celebrated on the 8th of November.

The structure:

  • the department´s administration (the head of the department, the deputy head of the department);
  • academic staff;
  • research laboratory;
  • education laboratory.
The department´s staffing provides teaching disciplines at a high methodological level. The academic staff consistently works to increase their scientific and methodological qualifications.

Objectives and functions:

    The main department´s objectives are:
  • to train Master´s level degree military specialists in the specialty «Military management (by types of armed forces)» by specialization «Combat employment and control of military intelligence and SOF units» as well as in the specialty «Maintenance of troops (forces)» by specialization «Organization of SIGINT»;
  • to take part in the professional retraining and advanced training of strategic and operational levels´ military specialists in the defined fields and specialties for the Armed forces and other military formations of Ukraine;
  • to provide education of highly qualified scientific and academic staff for the Armed Forces and other military formations of Ukraine;
  • to establish (improve) a regulatory framework and educational material and technical base for the provision of educational activities.
    The department´s functions are:
  • to carry out educational, methodical, scientific and technical activities;
  • to provide necessary conditions for obtaining complete higher education by the specialists of the Armed Forces and other Ukrainian military formations, created under the laws of Ukraine, as well as by civilian government employees of the Ministry of Defense, the General Staff, other executive bodies, which are involved in performance of tasks in the interests of national security and defense in peacetime and in times of crisis;
  • to ensure continuous improvement of the learning content, based on the structural changes in the Armed Forces, as well as in the nature and conditions of tasks performance, expertise in the use of troops in wars and armed conflicts and international peace support operations;
  • to provide advanced training and professional development for scientific and academic staff;
  • to conduct scientific research on the intelligence support effectiveness in operations (warfare);
  • to provide measures for preventing and combating corruption;
  • to introduce into the educational process scientific research on the intelligence support in operations (warfare);
  • to maintain at a high level the educational and logistical base and ensure its continuous improvement;
  • to provide preparation of informational, reference and analytical materials.

The principal achievements:

    The department provided the development and publication of the following periodicals:
  • tutorials – 1;
  • training manuals – 8;
  • educational-methodical manuals – 4;
  • factsheets – 2;
  • collections of academic and research conferences and seminars – 4.

Science and potential:

The scientific potential of the department includes: candidate of military science, professor – 1, candidate of technical science, associate professor – 1, candidate of military science – 1.

Throughout its existence 3 doctors of military science and 22 candidates of military science defended thesis at the department.
