A NATO expert group has completed an institutional audit of Ukraine’s professional military education (PME) system, conducted throughout 2025. The international experts’ principal conclusion was the recognition of Ukraine’s significant and convincing progress in bringing its military training system closer to Alliance standards, despite the challenges of russia’s full-scale armed aggression. The purpose of the audit was to review the recommendations issued in 2020 and assess the readiness of higher military education institutions to certify courses in accordance with NATO standards. The audit was conducted in several stages, ranging from institutional self-assessments to the expert group's direct review activities in the autumn of 2025. The National Defence University of Ukraine continues to modernize its educational and research environment. Meta Quest 3 virtual reality headsets are being integrated into the learning process, opening new opportunities for training, research, and psychological support for service members. The acquisition of modern VR sets became possible thanks to the support of the Norwegian charitable foundation "HMM Helsehjelp Ukraina", which generously donated ten VR headsets to the National Defence University of Ukraine. This is yet another example of how international cooperation contributes to the introduction of cutting-edge technologies into the training system of Ukraine’s defenders. The university leadership extends its sincere gratitude to "HMM Helsehjelp Ukraina" for supporting the Armed Forces of Ukraine and, in particular, higher military educational institutions.

War has many symbols. One of the most powerful is the hands of a medic. They stop the bleeding, restore breathing, support the wounded in their most difficult moments, and help them take their first steps on the road to recovery. Behind every such action stand years of training, immense responsibility, calm professionalism, and, above all, a profound commitment to saving human life. Today, Ukrainian medical professionals serve under conditions that few countries in the world have ever experienced. On the front line, at stabilization points, in operating rooms, military hospitals, and rehabilitation centres, they work where every decision can determine the fate of a human life. Amid explosions, after exhausting shifts, with no room for indifference or hesitation.

Greeting by the Commandant of the National Defence University of Ukraine, Colonel General Mykhailo KOVAL, on the Day of Ukrainian Statehood Statehood does not begin with borders. It begins with people who know who they are. People who remember their roots, defend their homeland, speak their language, preserve their culture, and refuse to let others determine their future. That is why Ukrainian statehood is not merely a date on the calendar or a chapter in history. It is a continuous choice made by generation after generation—the choice to remain free, to take responsibility, and to stand united in defence of our nation. Today, Ukrainian defenders reaffirm that choice every single day. They defend far more than our land. They defend Ukraine's right to exist as a sovereign, independent state, to educate its children, to build its future, and to live in freedom.

It is precisely this kind of strength—composed, responsible, and resolute—that helps the state endure, protect its people, and thwart the enemy’s plans. On January 29, we honor the heroic act that became a turning point in our national history. In January 1918, a group of young Ukrainians — cadets, students, and high school pupils — voluntarily stood against a vastly superior enemy. They lacked numbers and combat experience but possessed unbreakable determination to defend their state. Their choice was not about chances, but about dignity. And that is why it became a symbol for generations. Today, just like back then, Ukraine is fighting for its freedom. But now we are stronger: with an army that has experience and the trust of the people; with youth ready to defend; with officers who understand their responsibility not only on the battlefield, but also in everyday decisions.
