The BRDM-2 combat reconnaissance and surveillance vehicle is the main armored combat vehicle of the Soviet-made reconnaissance forces. The vehicle is wheeled, armored, floating, and armed with a 14.5 mm heavy machine gun (KPVT) and a twin 7.62 mm (PKT) machine gun in the turret mount. On May 22, 1962, the combat vehicle was put into service. Serial production was organized in 1963 at GAZ, and in 1965 at the Arzamas Machine-Building Plant, and continued in the USSR until 1989. Production continues in Poland.

  • The BRDM-2M-96i is a modernized version created in 1997 in Poland. The vehicle is equipped with a six-cylinder Iveco Aifo 8040 diesel engine and new brakes.
  • BRDM-2M-96ik “Szakal” is a modification developed in 2003 in Poland. The vehicle is equipped with a six-cylinder Iveco Aifo 8040SRC diesel engine, a new RRC-9500 radio station, air conditioning and lattice anti-strike screens. Instead of a 14.5-mm machine gun, the turret is equipped with a 12.7-mm WKM-B machine gun.
  • The BRDM-2M-97 “Żbik-B” is a further modernization of the BRDM-2M-96i. It is equipped with a six-cylinder Iveco Aifo 8040 SRC-21.11 diesel engine, a new transmission and additional equipment.
  • BRDM-2LD is a Ukrainian modernization of BRDM-2, manufactured by the State Enterprise Mykolaiv Repair and Mechanical Plant, by installing a Ukrainian-made SMD-21-08 diesel engine.
  • BRDM-2DI “Khazar” is a Ukrainian modernization of the 2005 BRDM-2 manufactured by the Mykolaiv Repair and Mechanical Plant by installing a FPT Iveco Tector (Euro 3) diesel engine and a new weapon system. By early 2011, the vehicle had passed state tests. On October 29, 2014, two BRDM-2DI Khazar were ordered for the Border Guard Service of Ukraine. Production began on December 30, 2014 at the Mykolaiv Armored Plant.
  • BRDM-2DP is a Ukrainian modernization of the BRDM-2. The lightweight modification, equipped with a diesel engine, is manufactured by Mayak Plant, Kyiv. The vehicle is armed with a 12.7-mm DShKM bow machine gun and 2 onboard 7.62-mm SGMB machine guns. The vehicle is also equipped with a side door for troops, removable anti-munitions nets and a device for overcoming trenches and trenches.
  • BRDM-2T is a Ukrainian modernization of the BRDM-2 made by “Tekhimpeks”. Additional wheels have been dismantled. The vehicle is equipped with side airborne hatches like the BTR-70, a R-173 radio station, a new D245.30E2 diesel engine with 155 hp, front and rear marker lights of the BTR-70, and new wheels with tubeless tires. The (KPVT) machine gun was replaced by a 12.7-mm machine gun NSVT. It is also possible to install other combat modules.
  • The Combat Wheeled Vehicle (CWV) Gecko is a Ukrainian modernization of the BRDM-2, developed by the Arey Engineering Group. The additional wheels have been dismantled, and the vehicle has a landing ramp behind it. A 215 hp General Motors engine is installed, and a hydrostatic drive is used instead of a mechanical transmission. The combined armor of the hull is capable of withstanding fire from 12.7 mm armor-piercing bullets, and the vehicle has a mine-resistant underbody. The CWV is equipped with a turret with 12.7 and 7.62 mm machine guns and a smoke jamming system.
