The history of the creation of the Air Force Logistics department began in 1994, when the training of operational-tactical level aviation rear specialists for the Ukrainian Air Force was started at the rear department of the Kyiv Air Force Institute.

In July 2000, in accordance with the directive of the Minister of Defense of Ukraine, the Department of Aerodrome Technical and Rear Support of Aviation was established as part of the Faculty of Specialists Training of the Operational-Tactical Level of the Air Force of the National Defense Academy of Ukraine. In June 2002, it was renamed the Department of Aviation- Technical and Airfield Support of Aviation.

Since September 2007, as a result of organizational measures, the department of Aviation-Technical and Airfield Support of Aviation was reorganized into the subject-methodical commission of Technical and Rear Support of the Air Force, which became a structural subdivision of the Logistics department of the Operational-Tactical faculty of the National Defense Academy of Ukraine.

After the National Defense Academy of Ukraine was reformed into the National Defense University of Ukraine, in 2010, the Air Force Logistics department was established as a structural unit of the Institute of Aviation and Air Defense.

The Air Force Logistics department is intended for the training of military professionals on the organization of military units (compounds) logistical support of the Ukrainian Air Force and other military formations in the specialty 254 “Supply of Troops (Forces)” in the specializations “Organization of Airfield-Technical and Engineering-airfield Support” and “Application and Management of Actions of Military Units and Institutions of Material and Technical Support”. In addition, the Department is responsible for the training of applicants for the third (educational and scientific) level of higher education (Doctor of Philosophy) in the specialty 255 “Weapons and Military Equipment” in the field of knowledge 25 “Military Sciences, National Security, Security of the State Border”, which is ensured by the performance of the main tasks:

  • conducting educational, methodical, educational work and scientific activities;
  • conducting scientific research on the problems of the application of Air Force logistics military units and the organization of the Air Force logistical support;
  • training the students to become commander-leaders in the best traditions of the Ukrainian army, the Ukrainian Cossacks, officers of previous generations and the cultural heritage of the Ukrainian people;
  • introduction the results of scientific research on the Air Force logistical support into the educational process, innovative methods of training military specialists for the Armed Forces of Ukraine.

Scientific potential of the department

The department has established fruitful scientific activities, as well as training of highly qualified scientists. During the years of the department's existence, its representatives and awardees have defended 6 dissertations for obtaining the scientific degree of Doctor of Sciences, 13 dissertations for obtaining the scientific degree of Candidate of Sciences (Doctor of Philosophy). Scientific and pedagogical staff of the department participated in more than 350 scientific (scientific and practical) conferences and seminars, published about 150 scientific articles in professional publications, received 22 patents of Ukraine for a useful model, published 4 monographs, 28 textbooks, 15 training manuals. Today, the scientific potential of the department is: 1 doctor of technical sciences, 4 candidates of sciences.

Further development of the Air Force Logistics department can be aimed at a number of directions that meet the needs and requirements of modern educational activities:

  • conducting research activities in the field of logistics support, studying new technologies, methods and strategies in this field;
  • active implementation of modern information technologies, such as data analytics to optimize logistics processes.

These directions of development will help the Air Force Logistics department to improve the quality of training and research activities, as well as to ensure the training of qualified specialists in the field of logistics that meet modern requirements and needs.
